Imperial Scout Corps

The Calamitous Bob

The Imperial Scout Corps was a renowned Old Imperial organization devoted to reconnaissance and monster hunting. Its surviving trace is the abandoned training base known as The Ballsack, where the organization’s former purpose survives only as a military ruin overrun by undead.

Purpose and Reputation

The Imperial Scout Corps is identified as a corps of monster hunters whose reputation outlasted the Old Empire itself. The brief description of the organization emphasizes both its military function and its specialized task: unlike an ordinary garrison, it trained personnel to locate and confront monsters in difficult frontier conditions. Its renown also places it within the Old Empire’s wider system of organized power, whose reach once extended from a highly planned imperial center into dangerous and remote territories.

The Ballsack Training Base

The corps’ training base stood in a small basin surrounded by tall trees. The vegetation would once have provided effective camouflage, allowing the site to conceal its military activity from the surrounding land. By the time Viviane Saint-Lys encountered it, however, the landscape was no longer alive in any ordinary sense. The base was crawling with undead even at noon, turning a facility designed to prepare hunters of monsters into a place occupied by the very kind of threat its personnel had been trained to face.

The base appeared as a small stone mass reached through the forest. Its informal name, The Ballsack, contrasted sharply with the disciplined reputation of the Imperial Scout Corps and with the grim state of the site. Viviane Saint-Lys approached from a crest overlooking the basin rather than simply entering. The undead were numerous, and although her Black alignment made her harder for them to smell, their poor eyesight did not make the approach safe: a close look could still reveal that she was human.

Imperial Ruins and the Deadlands

The training base belongs to a much larger imperial geography. Param was once the seat of the Old Empire’s power, while its western region contained the greatest magical catastrophe ever recorded. The former imperial heartland had become a vast scar: a valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains, dark at its center and increasingly green toward its margins, with the ruins of imperial civilization spread across the devastated landscape. The dead empire’s legacy remained in private collections and royal languages, while mindless undead moved through its remains.

The scale of the destruction makes the corps’ abandonment more significant than the loss of a single military post. In the former imperial city, estates, temples, churches, and squares extended for kilometers with the precision of rigorous urban planning, yet all stood dark and empty. The summit of the Imperial Ziggurat had been destroyed from within, leaving a crater with vitrified, molten edges more suggestive of an asteroid impact or tactical nuclear strike than conventional bombardment. Against this background, the Imperial Scout Corps represents a surviving fragment of a system that once imposed order on the continent but could not protect its own center from annihilation.

Military Legacy and Frontier Warfare

The organization’s remembered role illuminates the military logic of the post-imperial world. Later soldiers and knights distinguish sharply between specialized combat paths, equipment, and command structures. Heavy infantry required more than twenty ingots of steel per soldier, while even relatively light leather armor took two days for a skilled worker to produce once its materials were prepared. Such constraints made it impossible to equip every fighter as an elite warrior. Militiamen therefore served as economical, durable troops, while knights, archers, mages, and other specialists supplied concentrated power.

The Imperial Scout Corps occupied a specialized place within that broader system. Its members were not merely soldiers assigned to hold a fixed wall; they were trained monster hunters, implying mobility, observation, and the ability to operate beyond secure settlements. The later conduct of the three knights who accompany Viviane Saint-Lys shows the continuing value of specialized military knowledge. Their blades were designed to smash creatures backward without becoming lodged in withered flesh, and their formation and interception judgments allowed them to deal with revenants efficiently. Their experience also revealed a strategic danger: undead detected the knights from much farther away than they detected Viviane Saint-Lys, suggesting that a large expedition could trigger a localized zombie apocalypse.

Historical Significance

The Imperial Scout Corps is significant as an example of institutional continuity through ruin. Its name survives in a training base, but the organization itself has vanished from the active landscape. The base’s camouflage, its specialized mission, and its occupation by undead together create a compressed image of the Old Empire’s collapse: infrastructure remains, expertise has disappeared, and the frontier has reclaimed the institutions built to control it.

The corps also links the imperial past to the political fragmentation that follows. Param is divided among Baran, Enoria, and other countries, while the former Harrakan heartlands remain marked on maps with a skull. Cernit explains that Enoria, once a major power, split fifteen years earlier after a king’s purge of the nobility produced a bloody civil war. In this fractured world, the Imperial Scout Corps is remembered not as a functioning central authority but as evidence of an earlier continent-wide order whose military achievements could not survive the catastrophe that destroyed its seat of power.
